British PM defies calls to resign
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is clinging to his job, defying calls from his beleaguered Labor party to resign

He has instead announced a Cabinet reshuffle, which he hopes will help restore his fortunes. Brown has been badly stung by a scandal over British lawmakers' expenses, a string of top-level resignations and catastrophic results from the Labor Party's worst-ever local elections.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, "I do believe we've got to be quick on the action we take on this expenses crisis. Every MP is going to have his expenses examined for the last four years, not by a newspaper but by an independent auditor appointed to do exactly that job. The code of conduct would be mandatory on Members of Parliament, and of course the legislation would be instead of self regulation - that was the old gentlemen's club that I and many others entered in the 1980's - it's got to be changed."
